(April27) Today I attended a “Discover Scuba Class” sponsored by Wolf’s Diver Supply in Benton Harbor, MI. The introduction to scuba was held in the Saint Joseph HS pool beginning at 9:00 AM.
There the new students received instructions in putting on their dive gear, getting comfortable with putting their face into the water and breathing on a regulator. All the necessary skills in getting them to be familiar and comfortable with breathing underwater in the shallows until slowly venturing out to deeper water with the instructors.
While this was underway, experienced divers were allowed to use the pool to dust off their dive gear, get their self mentally in tune for diving and to practice their “rusty” skills to get ready for this summer’s diving adventures. It was also a good time to check out the “shrinkage” of last year’s wet suit, try out a full-face dive mask, and to play with an underwater scooter if you wanted to.
I really enjoyed getting back into the water since I have been “dry” since recovering from having had lower back surgery earlier in the year. Pool diving is always a great time to come up to speed and obtain the correct mind set before venturing back into the open water.
If there is ever a Discover Scuba Class in your neighborhood, I recommend you give it a try. You might surprise yourself and really enjoy it.
Included a few pictures of various participants doing a little SCUBA for the first time.
